Ginger tumeric orange kombucha recipe

There’s something about the cold winter months that is incredibly special. The chance to cozy up by the fire with a warm drink and a good book, or the excuse to indulge in a new box set or simply get out and about to enjoy the fun of winter. That being said, the cold winter months aren’t always the best for our ‘get up and go’. In fact, you may very well feel that your get up and go has got up and went!

Don’t worry, help is here in the form of a delicious kombucha that will give you energy, immunity and a general sense of wellbeing. Plus, it’s a recipe that is so simple and easy, as well as inexpensive to make. Sound like a plan? Let’s get started.

Here’s what you are going to need to give yourself a daily dose of energy-boosting immunity.

Ingredients For The ‘Get Up And Go’ Kombucha

  • 1 inch of fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 inch of fresh turmeric, grated
  • 120 mL of fresh orange juice
  • ~ 350mL of plain kombucha (prepared from Karma Cultures kombucha kit and recipe)
*adjust ginger and turmeric quantities to taste

See, we told you it wasn’t going to cost you an arm and a leg!

Note on the ingredients: We know that you may already have ground ginger and turmeric in your kitchen but you will love kombucha made with fresh ingredients. It’s the freshly grated ginger and turmeric that will not only give this tonic a real kick of flavour but extra health benefits. It’s not hard to find fresh ginger, and I am finding fresh turmeric in more and more supermarkets. If you are struggling to find it try the organic market near you.

Why These Ingredients?

What makes the ingredients of the GetUp And Go Kombucha so good?

Ginger

  •  Combats inflammation and boosts the immune system
  •  Soothes the digestive system
  • Encourages circulation and can aid in relieving pain
  • Can alleviate mild nausea (a lifesaver in early pregnancy)

As well as providing the body with ample health benefits, it also adds a great warming kick to the tonic; a good way to get that weary mind and body ready for the day ahead.

Turmeric

Turmeric seems to be getting a lot of press these days for being a food that we should all be taking more of.

  • Has anti-inflammatory properties
  • Can have a powerful antioxidant effect on the body
  • Can improve brain function (brain fog, anyone?)
  • Can improve our heart health
  • May even help to prevent cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease

Orange Juice

This one is all about the vitamin C! As well as helping our body to fight colds and flu symptoms, vitamin C also provides our system with extra defense against chronic diseases, it may help battle high blood pressure and can give the immunity a great helping hand all year round.

Kombucha

  • Provides your body with a natural way to detox
  • Gives your digestion a soothing and helping hand
  • Boosts your energy levels
  • Improves your mood
  • Helps you to lose weight

The Recipe!

Step 1

Grate 1 inch of fresh ginger, capturing as much of the juices as you can into a small dish. Don’t worry too much about measuring the ingredients, approximate amounts are fine.

Step 2

You will need gloves for this! Turmeric is super staining to everything. Hands, countertops, plastic utensils, and more. If you get it on something you didn’t want, the trick is to remove it with alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol 70% or vodka (or other spirits you have at home) will work.

Grate 1 inch of fresh turmeric, capturing as much of the juices as you can into a small dish.

Step 3

Pour the juices into a 500mL bottle.

Step 4

Add 150ml of fresh orange juice.

Step 5

Top off with your plain homemade kombucha, and seal. Leave at room temperature for 2-3 days to build carbonation. Refrigerate and enjoy it!

Note: This kombucha is best enjoyed within a week or so. Overtime the turmeric and ginger become bitter when left in the bottle.
