Super Greens Kombucha Recipe

Polar vortexes, deep freezes, snow in Maui AND Vegas, oh my! This winter has been one for the books! I’m sure I’m not alone in counting the days until spring has sprung. This year the Spring Equinox occurs (for North America) on Wednesday, March 20, 5:58 pm EST.

This delineates the time where the hours of daylight are equal to the hours of darkness due to the tilt of the Earth, revolving in relation to the sun. It is also the day where the sun rises and sets in true East/West directions.

The marking of the Equinox and the first day of Spring brings to mind all things green; trees beginning to bud, the first of the spring bulbs emerging out of the snow, blades of grass bursting into life again from the thawing ground and tasty, tender, fresh spring produce available locally at the market again. It’s a time of renewal and rebirth and what better time to start a cleanse than after the other notoriously green precursor – St. Patrick’s Day! With its revelry of lucky shamrocks, green beer and Irish Shenanigans (aka kissing and/or pinching complete strangers becoming publicly acceptable for one day only), all this can take a toll if you get swept up in the excitement and happen to overdo it.

Hit the reset button with an alkalizing, antioxidant and probiotic-rich Super Greens Kombucha to restore balance and vitality. But wait… what exactly are super greens? Well, this could include a number of different foods such as alfalfa sprouts, dark leafy greens, wheatgrass, spirulina, matcha green tea or herbs such as mint. The important thing they all have in common is they contain chlorophyll.

Chlorophyll is a powerful phytonutrient found in green foods. It has many health benefits including anti-inflammatory properties, alkalization, detoxifying and oxygenating the blood, chelating heavy metals, speeding up the healing process, repairing damaged DNA and eliminating odours from the mouth, throat and digestive tract, eliminating bad breath. Talk about a spring cleaning for the system!

To create your own Super Greens Kombucha you’ll need the following:

  • 2L green tea kombucha and one of the following:
    • 1 tsp liquid chlorophyll supplement (for this recipe, I used Land Art’s Mint Chlorophyll)
    • 1 Spirulina tablet (crushed)
    • 1 tsp powdered greens supplement
    • 1/4 cup fresh wheatgrass juice or other juiced dark greens

DIRECTIONS

Mix greens into your brewed Kombucha and drink as is, or you may do a second ferment by sealing into bottles and leaving for an additional 3-7 days.

Enjoy!
